What causes sagging skin under the eyes?

As we age, the skin loses elasticity and firmness.

The eye area, with its fragile skin, is often the first place to show evidence of these changes.

Excess skin can develop on the lower eyelids.

Weakness of the skin and muscles surrounding the eyes causes eyelid laxity, allowing orbital fat to bulge and altering the eyelid contours.

While the upper eyelid may become hooded, loose skin and fat prolapse can create folds and pouches on the lower eyelids, creating shadows and dark circles under the eyes.

If this sounds familiar, then book a no-obligation consultation here to discuss whether lower eyelid surgery is for you.

Benefits Lower Eyelid Surgery Liverpool

Lower eyelid surgery is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to remove the sagging skin and orbital fat that cause under-eye bags.

The key benefits of blepharoplasty surgery for the lower eyelids are:

  • Removal of excess skin and eye bags
  • Partial fat removal, if necessary, to give smoother contours
  • A smoother, fresher look to the skin in the under-eye area
  • No more dark circles

Although cosmetic eyelid surgery is considered a minor procedure, it has a significant impact on the whole face, as a brighter eye area creates a more alert and youthful appearance.

Who will perform my blepharoplasty surgery?

Dr George Christopoulos will perform your lower eyelid blepharoplasty procedure.

Dr Christopoulos has an excellent reputation as an aesthetic and plastic surgeon, achieving outstanding results for his patients.

What happens during surgery to remove under eye bags?

Firstly, your eyelid will be numbed with a local anaesthetic.

Dr Christopoulos will then make a small skin incision below your lower lash line on each eye.

These incisions will be used to reposition excess fat, smoothing the contours of the lower lid.

Excess skin and unwanted orbital fat will be removed, and the skin edges will be closed using sutures.

Your procedure will be performed under local anaesthetic and will take up to a couple of hours in total.

Preparing for Lower Eyelid Surgery

It is essential to be healthy, rested and hydrated before your lower blepharoplasty surgery as this improves your chances of a speedy recovery.

Other steps you can take include:

  • Arrive with clean makeup-free eyes
  • Stop smoking at least six weeks before your procedure
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours
  • Stop taking any herbal remedies, supplements or medications that could worsen bruising. These include St. John’s Wort, Vitamin E, fish oil, aspirin, or ibuprofen.
  • Consult your doctor if you are taking blood-thinning tablets for a medical reason.

You will have an initial consultation to ensure you are a good candidate for the procedure and that it will achieve the result you desire.

Recovery from Under-Eye Bag Surgery

This is an outpatient procedure, and so you will go home after your surgery.

Please ensure that you have someone to drive you home, as your vision will be affected by swelling.

We give our Liverpool patients the following advice to ensure a straightforward recovery after their blepharoplasty surgery.

  • Use paracetamol and lubricating drops to keep your eyes comfortable – we will provide them.
  • Use cold compresses to reduce swelling
  • Rest as much as possible in the first few days
  • Introduce light activities after a few days, but avoid strenuous activities for at least 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Avoid smoke, direct sunlight, swimming pool chlorine, contact lenses and using make-up and skin care products that may irritate the eyes for the same period.

Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns during your recovery.

Can I have a blepharoplasty on my upper and lower eyelids?

Yes, we offer upper and lower lid blepharoplasty procedures to our Liverpool patients.

Upper eyelid surgery targets excess skin on the upper lid.

Lid laxity and sagging skin on the upper eyelids can create a hooded effect, making the eyes look weary.

In severe cases, droopy eyelids can obstruct vision.

Dr Christopoulos will remove excess eyelid skin to give a much more youthful, wide-eyed expression.

Are the Results of Lower Blepharoplasty Surgery Permanent?

Lower eyelid surgery can have a significant impact on your appearance, making you look years younger.

However, no surgical procedure can stop the ageing process altogether, and you may wish to have further treatment in the future.

About Liverpool

Liverpool is a vibrant city and port on the Mersey Estuary in North West England. It has an eclectic mix of cultures reflecting its international seafaring past and its proximity to both Ireland and Wales.

Among the city’s famous sons are, of course, The Beatles. Visitors still flock to the Cavern Club, the tiny venue where the Fab Four played in the nineteen sixties.

The city has other claims to fame, including the stunning architecture along its waterfront, such as the Royal Liver Building and the Royal Albert Dock, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
