What causes rosacea?
The cause of rosacea is still unknown, but a combination of factors seems to make it more likely that some people will develop it rather than others.
Having fair skin that burns easily with sun exposure is a risk factor, and most cases of rosacea occur in women; the exception being phymatous rosacea.
There is a genetic link as rosacea runs in families.
What do rosacea symptoms look like?
Rosacea may start with flushing that develops into a persistent facial redness, typically across the nose and cheeks.
There may also be bumps and red patches with visible blood vessels.
In severe cases, the skin texture may become rougher.
Sometimes these symptoms may be mistaken for acne or a ‘rosy’ complexion.
The affected areas may feel hot or experience stinging sensations
What are the four types of rosacea?
Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea (ETR)
This is the most common type of rosacea, causing persistent redness, burning, sensitive or stinging skin and visible enlarged blood vessels in the cheeks, nose, forehead and chin.
Papulopustular rosacea
This is a common skin condition, often called acne rosacea, characterised by the redness and flushing of ETR along with acne breakouts.
Phymatous rosacea
Sufferers from this rarer form of rosacea may have thickened skin with lumps and bumps on the nose, chin, forehead, ears and eyelids.
Ocular rosacea
In this subtype, patients experience chronic eye inflammation resulting in symptoms such as redness, itching, burning and dry, sore eyes that are sensitive to light, as well as skin symptoms.
What are the triggers for rosacea flare-ups?
Patients with rosacea-prone skin often recognise that environmental factors can aggravate rosacea.
Common rosacea triggers include:
- sun exposure
- certain foods, especially spicy foods
- extremes of weather temperature – very hot or cold
- hot drinks
- hot baths and showers
- perfumed skin care
- certain medications
- stress
- alcohol
Combined with our highly effective rosacea treatments, avoiding triggers is an essential part of managing the condition.
What kind of rosacea treatment is provided at Amanda Azzopardi Aesthetics Liverpool?
We use cutting-edge DermaV™ Laser therapy to treat rosacea.
This laser rosacea treatment uses precisely targeted laser energy to reduce redness, inflammation and flushing in the skin.
The small blood vessels collapse as they come into contact with the laser, and your body flushes away the debris, clearing the skin.
This pain-free treatment delivers excellent results for patients at our Liverpool clinic.
How do I know this is the proper treatment for me?
Before starting your laser treatment, you will have a consultation with Amanda, who will assess your skin condition and ensure that DermaV™ will deliver the results you want.
How long does laser rosacea treatment take?
A laser treatment session lasts for 30 to 45 minutes with minimal downtime
Will my skin need any special care after my laser therapy for rosacea?
Your skin will need to be protected from sun exposure after laser treatment.
You should use gentle skincare products for a few days.
How quickly will I see results from laser redness treatment?
You may notice some improvement after one treatment session, or it may take a few treatments to yield results.
Is DermaV™ Laser suitable for sensitive skin?
This is a gentle, precisely targeted treatment suitable for the majority of skin types, including sensitive skin.
The response will depend on the severity of your rosacea, but you will soon notice a reduction in skin redness and inflammation.

Are the benefits of DermaV™ laser therapy permanent?
Laser therapy is a highly effective treatment option for rosacea, but it does not provide a permanent cure.
However, our Liverpool patients report that the appearance and comfort of their skin are much improved by DermaV™ Laser treatment, with significant benefits typically lasting around 18 months, when maintenance treatments may be required.

About Liverpool
Liverpool is a vibrant city and port situated on the Mersey Estuary in North-West England. It has an eclectic mix of cultures reflecting an international seafaring past and its proximity to both Ireland and Wales.
Among the city’s famous sons are, of course, The Beatles. Visitors still flock to the Cavern Club, the tiny venue where the Fab Four played in the nineteen sixties.
The city has other claims to fame, including the stunning architecture found on its waterfront, such as the Royal Liver Building and the Royal Albert Dock, a UNESCO-listed site.
