What is melasma?
Melasma is a common skin condition characterised by dark patches on the skin.
It affects adults, particularly those with darker skin tones.
The causes of melasma
The root cause of melasma is unknown, but the dark patches are associated with melanocytes, pigment-producing cells in the skin.
Several triggers have been identified.
Pregnancy
Up to 50% of women may develop the hyperpigmentation of melasma during pregnancy.
Hormonal changes
Women on birth control tablets and hormone replacement therapy are prone to developing melasma.
Sun exposure
Exposure to ultraviolet light triggers melasma, as it is usually found on sun-exposed areas of the body.
Typical areas affected are the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, nose, chin, forearms and neck.
Many patients find that their dark patches fade slightly in the winter and then become more obvious again in the summer.
How we treat melasma at our Liverpool Aesthetics Clinic
We use a range of treatments for melasma, and most patients find that combined treatments yield the best results for their skin.
LaseMD Ultra
This is a gentle but effective laser treatment that we use to precisely target dark spots.
The laser energy breaks down the pigment responsible for melasma, revealing fresh, clear skin.
Chemical Peels
Chemical and enzyme peels remove the outer layer of the skin and promote the production of fresh skin cells, restoring a brighter complexion with a more even skin tone.
Specialised Skincare
The consistent use of premium-grade skin care products containing active ingredients such as Vitamin C and retinoids will lighten dark marks and improve the overall appearance of the skin.
We can recommend the best skincare for your skin type.
The proper treatment plan for your skin type
Every skin is unique, and one treatment plan does not fit everyone
Each patient at our Liverpool clinic has a consultation with Amanda before starting any course of treatment.
Amanda will listen to your concerns and examine your skin.
She will then prepare a personalised treatment plan designed to reduce hyperpigmentation and restore a more even skin tone and a brighter complexion.

Is Melasma treatment permanent?
No. Melasma can not be cured completely.
Our advanced treatments will make a significant difference to the appearance of your skin, but you may develop additional melasma patches in the future, and further treatments may be required.
Maintaining long-lasting results of melasma treatment in Liverpool
The best way to prevent melasma from worsening after treatment is to protect the skin from UV radiation with sun protection.
We recommend the following to our Liverpool patients.
Broad-spectrum sunscreen
You should always wear broad-spectrum sun cream with an SPF 30 or above and a high UVA rating. Sunscreen containing iron oxide is the most effective as it provides a mineral barrier.
Protective clothing
It is so tempting to take off layers when it’s sunny, but sun exposure can make melasma worse and cause other sun damage, such as sun spots and freckles.
Wearing a large-brimmed hat to protect the face and scalp, and closely woven, light layers, is the best way to keep your skin free of dark spots.

About Liverpool
Liverpool is a port city and metropolitan borough in North West England. It is located on the Mersey Estuary at the entrance to the Irish Sea.
From the Beatles to Brookside, Liverpool has made an enormous contribution to British culture. The list of Liverpool-born actors alone, which includes Stephen Graham, Jason Isaacs, Kim Cattrall and Jodie Comer, shows how far this relatively small city of around 1.5 million people punches above its cultural weight.
The city has other claims to fame, including the stunning architecture along its waterfront, such as the Royal Liver Building and the Royal Albert Dock, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
